A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.
In searching through thousands of flickr images it is very apparent that most people do not understand this definition. Most of the hundreds of thousands of images are of snapshots. Some are very beautifully lit and composed, but do not get across to me who this person is other than a model for the photographer. I had a very hard time finding what I believe to be true portraits of people that tell me who they are in one image. I chose black and white images because I think it helps focus the viewer on the physical characteristics of the subject. I am not convinced some of these are true portraits, but I liked them enough for this collection.
